Prep Time10 minutes
Active Time15 minutes
Total Time25 minutes
Yield: 4 4 oz jar

Equipment

  • Digital kitchen scale
  • Silicone spatula
  • Four clean, completely dry 4-ounce wide-mouth jars for the small batch, or sixteen jars for the gift batch
  • Small dry scoop, if desired

Materials

Four 4-ounce jars, with a little extra

  • The total mixture is about 16.8 ounces 476 g, enough for four 4-ounce jars with a small amount left over for transfer loss. A digital scale that reads tenths of a gram is useful for weighing the essential oils in this small batch.
  • 381 g Granulated white sugar: 13.44 ounces
  • 47.6 g Coconut oil: 1.68 ounces
  • 45.2 g Jojoba oil: 1.596 ounces
  • 1.8 g Orange essential oil: about 40-42 drops
  • .6 g Steam-distilled lime essential oil: 14 drops

Sixteen-jar gift batch

  • This makes about 67.2 ounces 1,905 g of scrub, including roughly 5% extra for filling sixteen jars to 4 ounces net weight each. Weigh the ingredients rather than relying on volume measurements, especially for the essential oils.
  • 1524 g Granulated white sugar: 53.76 ounces
  • 190 g Coconut oil: 6.72 ounces
  • 181 g Jojoba oil: 6.384 ounces
  • 7 g Orange essential oil: about 0.25 ounces
  • 2.4 g Steam-distilled lime essential oil: around 50-54 drops

Instructions

  • Prepare the jars. Wash and dry the jars completely. Make sure no water remains inside or around the rims.
  • Soften the coconut oil. If it is firm, soften it just enough to mix. Do not heat it until hot or liquid.
  • Mix the oils. Whisk the jojoba oil into the softened coconut oil until smooth.
  • Stir in the citrus oils. Add the orange and steam-distilled lime essential oils and mix thoroughly.
  • Fold in the sugar. Add it in a few portions until every crystal is coated. The finished scrub should be scoopable, not soupy.
  • Fill your hand-scrub jars. Tare each jar and fill to 4 ounces (113.4 g) net weight. Wipe the rims clean before capping.
  • Label and store. Add the ingredient label and keep the closed jars in a cool, dry place.

Notes

Tips for Making the Sugar Hand Scrub
Soften the coconut oil only enough to mix; do not heat it until hot or liquid.
Add the sugar gradually so you can coat it evenly and keep the mixture scoopable.
Make sure the jars and rims are completely dry before filling.
If the coconut oil softens in a warm kitchen and the oils separate, stir the scrub before using it.
Keep water out of the jar and use a clean, dry scoop or dry fingers.
How to Use Your Citrus Hand Scrub
Scoop about 1 teaspoon of scrub with dry fingers or a dry spoon. Massage it over your hands for 20 to 30 seconds, then rinse well and pat your hands dry. Follow with a small amount of Homemaker’s Hand Salve if you want.
Use the scrub only on your hands. Avoid your eyes and broken or irritated skin, and stop using it if irritation occurs. The sink or tub may become slippery from the oils, so rinse the surface wel
