🌍 Trip Overview
Where they went: Papua New Guinea
When: July 2023
Papua New Guinea, located in the southwestern Pacific, is a country known for its immense cultural and linguistic diversity, with over 800 distinct languages spoken. Historically, the region was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before European exploration and colonization, first by the Dutch and later by the British and Germans in the 19th century. It gained independence from Australia in 1975.
Religion plays a central role in society, with so-called Christianity being the dominant faith, though traditional beliefs and practices remain deeply influential in the churches in many communities. The mormons, JWs and seventh day adventists have made an impact.
Economically, Papua New Guinea is rich in natural resources such as gold, copper, oil, natural gas, and timber, making resource extraction the backbone of its economy. However, despite its resource wealth, much of the population still depends on subsistence farming, and the nation faces challenges like infrastructure gaps, poverty, and balancing economic growth with environmental and cultural preservation.
“My favorite was when we went to Papua New Guinea. I saw how they loved, there weren’t as rich as us but they were happy and ever since I saw that I’ve been happier ever since”
🙌 A Moment That Left a Mark
I met a little girl that became a friend and the people there were so nice. I played with other children at eh hotel and they climbed up so high on top of the hotel and got a coconut down for us to share and we played King Ezra.
🔥 Faith-Stretching Lessons
[God used this trip to grow my faith because he allowed me] to see how happy they were to receive the Gospel tracts when people in America aren’t that happy to. It helped me become more appreciative.
💬 Words for Future Missionaries
Be prepared, get ready to face challenges, know the Bible and remember to be kind and not look down on the people.
💗 Missions Beyond the Trip
I have more of a burden and I’ve always wanted to go back to PNG. I can’t wait to go back and see the same people and meet new people.
