- Play pretend as a sweet, caring character.
- Develop confidence by stepping into a role and using their imagination.
- Create memories with siblings, friends, and family who join in the fun.
This costume isn’t limited to fall time—it’s perfect for rainy days, playdates, or even cozy family photo shoots.
How to Throw a Raggedy Ann Themed Birthday Party
If your child loves dolls, pretend play, and old-fashioned fun, a Raggedy Ann birthday party is a sweet and unique theme. Here are some ideas to bring it to life:
Raggedy Ann Themed Invitations
Design invitations featuring Raggedy Ann’s iconic red and blue plaid, polka dots, red yarn hair and blue dress. You could even use gingham or patchwork patterned fabric for a homemade, vintage touch. I made these before I really learned how to use canva, but you could create something much better even with the free canva version.
Dress-Up Photo Booth Station
Encourage guests to come in red, blue, or raggedy ann doll-inspired outfits. For the birthday star, provide the full Raggedy Ann Costume so she can shine as the guest of honor. We requested that the kiddos wear overalls, plaid, dresses, aprons, etc.
3. Party Décor
- Use red, blue, and white balloons and streamers, especially red gingham for tables, which is easy to find.
- Display Raggedy Ann dolls or vintage storybooks on the tables.
- Create a photo booth with props like vintage dolls, a gingham table cloth hung on the wall, oversized buttons, aprons, and yarn wigs. Add some gold balloons for the age of the birthday girl or boy!
- Set up a photo opportunity and make sure to get everyone’s picture with the birthday girl or boy.
4. Games & Activities
You can come up with all sorts of games to play. Since our party was in October, we decided to have a whole fall festival. We had a bounce house and the yard was full of carnival games. We did pumpkin bowling where the kids knocked over paper towel rolls with a small pumpkin. Then we had several throwing games. Someone loaned us a corn hole game. Of course, the kids mostly want to play in the bounce house.
We gave out tickets as for kids who won each game, then set up a prize booth where they could exchange tickets for prizes. This worked out well because the prizes were very high quality compared to the amount of tickets they had to earn. We used these prizes in lieu of party favors.
Some additional game ideas include:
- Pin the Bow on Raggedy Ann – a fun twist on “Pin the Tail on the Donkey.”
- Doll Hospital – set up a station with bandages and play doctor supplies for kids to “fix” dolls.
- Storytime Circle – read a Raggedy Ann story aloud for everyone to enjoy.
- Makeup booth- give everyone a raggedy ann makeover!
5. Food & Cake
- Make cupcakes decorated with little red yarn “hair” swirls of frosting.
- Serve picnic-style finger foods in gingham baskets.
- Create a Raggedy Ann birthday cake with her sweet face piped on top.
A Costume Worth Keeping
One of the best things about a Raggedy Ann costume is its lasting value. Unlike plastic dress-up sets or flimsy costumes, a handmade dress and apron with a crocheted wig can be worn over and over again. It’s durable, timeless, and makes a wonderful keepsake.
